When Teams starts misbehaving — not opening, chats not loading, sign‑in issues, random errors — the most common request from IT or support is simple:
“Clear the Teams cache.”
This is what they mean.
✅ New Microsoft Teams – Windows (recommended way)
This is the easiest and safest option for most users.
- Close Microsoft Teams completely
- Open Settings in Windows
- Go to Apps > Installed apps
- Search for Microsoft Teams
- Click Advanced options
- Select Reset
- Open Teams again and sign in
✅ Chats and files are not deleted
✅ Only local data is cleared
✅ This is fully supported by Microsoft
✅ New Microsoft Teams – Windows (manual method)
If IT or helpdesk asks you to do it manually:
- Close Microsoft Teams completely
- Press Windows + R
- Paste this path and press Enter:
%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Microsoft\MSTeams
- Delete everything inside the folder
- Open Teams again
👉 First launch may take a bit longer — that’s normal.
✅ New Microsoft Teams – macOS
- Close Microsoft Teams
- Open Terminal
- Run these commands:
rm -rf ~/Library/Group\ Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teamsrm -rf ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2
- Open Teams again and sign in
✅ Microsoft Teams classic – Windows
If you are still using Teams classic:
- Close Microsoft Teams completely
- Press Windows + R
- Paste this path and press Enter:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Teams
- Delete all files and folders in that directory
- Open Teams again
✅ Microsoft Teams classic – macOS
- Close Microsoft Teams
- Open Terminal
- Run this command:
rm -r ~/Library/Application\ Support/Microsoft/Teams
- Open Teams again and sign in
What to expect after clearing the cache
- You will need to sign in again
- Teams may start a little slower the first time
- Most random or unexplained issues are usually gone
